Bill McAuley began his career in newspapers and magazines in 1969 as a cadet photographer at The Age in Melbourne.
After learning to develop film and print photographs in the newspaper’s darkroom, he moved to Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph in 1970 and, for the next 40 years, worked out of publications in Melbourne, Sydney, London and Canberra.
Bill and his cameras have covered everything from breaking hard news, crime, terrible bushfires and despairing droughts, to sport, politics, the arts and human-interest tales.
During The 1980s he travelled throughout rural Victoria photographing hundreds of rural assignments for The Australian.
In 1987, Bill joined The Australian as a senior photographer. He was appointed as the foundation pictorial editor for The Sunday Herald in 1989, The Sunday Herald Sun in 1991 and the Sunday Magazine in 1997. Bill also worked as acting pictorial editor for The Herald Sun, a daily newspaper in Melbourne.
Bill has won the coveted Australian Press Photographer of The Year Award and received the Eltham Arts Council Award for Outstanding Service to the Arts, and the Camberwell Art Show ‘Social Justice’ Prize. The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra has acquired nine of Bill’s portraits for its collection.
After retiring from News Corp, Bill returned to live in his hometown Warrandyte with wife Claire and their border collie, Freddy. He still swims in the Yarra River on most days, weather permitting!
